Dedicated to the emergency care of children, the Paediatric Emergency Department (ED) at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre is the only designated Paediatric ED between Toronto’s HSC and Winnipeg’s Children’s Hospital. It is one of four provincially recognized Emergency Departments in Ontario with an annual volume of 39,000 patient visits. It is the Paediatric Trauma Centre for southwestern Ontario serving a population of 1.8 million people. The Children’s Hospital Paediatric ED is part of the London Health Sciences hospital complex. The facility was opened in 2000 and is one of three emergency departments within the Emergency Care Program at LHSC.


Included in the paediatric emergency patient care area is an area for the care of ill and injured patients, intermediate care area and an ambulatory care area for the care of minor illness and injury. Comprehensive emergency care for children from birth through adolescence is provided by an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, child life specialists and social workers, all specifically trained in the care of children. Included in the scope of practice is the utilization of Point of Care Ultrasound and point of care x-rays for complicated fracture reduction.


The Children’s Hospital Paediatric Emergency Department offers an accredited Fellowship Program in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. The faculty are involved in numerous academic research and teaching activities.
